12 months, 5 countries, 203 shows, 3,000 headsets, festivals galore and a 12 week residency in New York, Headphone Disco comes to Islington for an exclusive London residency on the last Friday of every month.
Unfamiliar with the concept? It works by taking a room full of clubbers, removing the sound system, arming said clubbers with a set of wireless headphones and having two separate DJ's broadcast to them over two FM channels either of which the wearer can select via a toggle switch on the side of their specially adapted "disco muffs".
Clubbers can throw on their muffs and choose to wig out to a floor-shakin' mix of rock n' roll, indie and alternative grooves on one channel or tune into the eclectic soundscape of the second channel where everything from Johnny Cash to Kanye and Stevie Wonder to David Guetta will get a look in. Take the headphones off and you'll witness the surreal spectacle of a mass of humanity, throwing moves, pulling shapes and singing along to what appears to a soundtrack that only they can hear. Utterly bizarre but hugely enjoyable.
Set up 18 months ago by a couple of DJ pals from Glasgow, the Headphone Disco DJ Orchestra now comprises a core of 6 residents based throughout the UK and Ireland each of whom bring their own musical agenda to the decks.
